The poet sat in the garden houseUnder a hawthorn tree,And stared at the men in helmets whoHad just come up from the sea.He gathered his words about himLike a shield in the Land of Rhyme,The 'glow in the red-raw evening sky'He left for another time.He watched as they burned his orchard,Put his imagery to the sword,Then wandered back to their surly shipsIn the Bay of Bleak Discord. The heron sat in the estuary,The raven sat on the shore,The poet threw up a stanza thereThat ends with - 'Nevermore!'For Death had called in the morningLeft his calling card on the tray:'I'd be obliged if you'd meet with meAt noon, on Saturday!'He packed his verse in a travelling caseAnd told his wife 'Goodbye!'Then sent his 'Helen of Troy' poste hasteTo hide on the Isle of Skye.He went to the tree Yggdrasil, satAnd waited for Death to chat,But Death left a message to follow him;'I'll get my coat and hat!'David Lewis Paget 143

Gretchen wept in her easy chairAnd called for her husband, Karl,They'd been together for sixty years,Though both were worn and frail. They'd met in the ruins of München, whenThe Reich collapsed and fell,Escaped to live in AustraliaFrom their own idea of hell. For Karl had served in the Wermacht,In a Tank Corps at Dieppe,Had served in the Panzergruppe von KleistHad roamed the Russian steppes,His tank had taken him through UkraineThey'd taken the plains by force,But found their pain when the Russians came,In their huge T-34's.But that was the world of way back when,For Karl was old and grey,He slept a lot in his tidy home,The nurse came every day,His wife developed dementia, she'dForget where she used to roam,So she was parted from husband Karl,Was sent to a Nursing Home!He walked with the aid of a walking frame,He couldn't quite get around,But listened for echoes of Gretchen's voiceIn the house that made no sound,And all he thought was to rescue her,To bring his girl back home,But the powers that be said: 'Wait and see!'She was lost to him - Alone! He went to visit her, once a week,They held each other's hand,She cried so much when he had to leave,She never could understand,And he was desolate every time,He'd cling to her so tight,That they had to prise his hand awayWhen they sent him away at night. The nurses were harsh and businesslike,To them it was just a job,With no compassion for patients, theyWould leave all that to God.Demented souls ran over his feetWith trolleys and walking frames,When Karl grew angry, they shrugged and said:'Well - Everyone complains!'One Sunday, standing outside the doors,He saw his Tiger Tank,It growled, and pulled up beside him thereAnd the diesel fumes, they stank. He climbed aboard with his comrades there,And 'Schnell!' they called, to a man,Then lumbered straight through the double doors,The nurses turned and ran!The Tiger reared and it turned aboutTore carpet up from the floor,The tracks ran over the matron's feet,Let out a fearful roar,The patients cheered as the Iron CrossRaced past their common room,And smashed the glass in the office door,And crushed the sister's urn! Then Gretchen laughed as he came in sight,'Here comes my husband, Karl! He'll break us out of this prison ward,Can you hear his Tiger snarl?' He stopped and reached for his Gretchen thenLooked deep in her eyes, and swore:'I'll not be parted from you againThough hell should bar the door! They found them lying together there,He held her safe in his arms,They'd gone together where lovers goAway from the world's alarms.'He went quite crazy,' the Matron said,'He must have been insane!'For lying outside her shattered doorWas his twisted walking frame!David Lewis Paget 143

Her head bowed shePeered vacantly into the abyssAnd scraped the barrel of hopelessnessThat was her life. Just a crumb of recognitionWould carry her into the next hourA morsel of humanityTo say I recognise you. Her eyes alight on a reflection,A face now alienIn this barren wretched life,A young, hopeful woman. The soul stirred from itsDeep black slumberOf enforced hibernationAnd she tickled the feet of catastrophe.11th March 2010 143

In awe I sit, pondering a thoughtFreely, my tears streak my faceAnswers I found that were soughtI can feel her presence in this place.Love that was hers I have foundDoes it truly belong to me?Chain of secrecy I am boundIn my mind her face I see.Leisurely, I walk in her footprintsThat so delicately treadOn many hearts she left imprintsIs it my love or hers instead?I feel I am in a competitionIn a race through ghostly timeAm I truly in a positionTo take what I hope is mine?Your words reflect what once wasIn another time and placeWhat is it that she doesTo keep your smiling face?Forever in your heartI know she will continue to stayDevoutly, in fact never to partHer essence will never go away.© June 8, 2009 143

Sky, sea, mountains, falls, rivers, forests and fields; Trees, leaves, flowers, fruits, bees, flies and birds; Fish, reptiles, animals and men form living beings. They are all creations of Nature created by God; Naturally no doubt a great wonder Nature is ever! Of all the beings man only has advanced by mind And he feels a separate entity away from Nature Due to attachment to body, matter and mind ever! Galaxies, stars, planets and moon are boon of universe; All pervading spirit is acting everything everywhere; Nature is the matter It has created to do all wonders! Man controls energy to do mechanical work by machines; With materials he does all what is not naturally possible; Yet, Nature’s wonders he cannot achieve by art or science! 143
