Heavy Rain

For some of us

Changes in the weather

Have more significant impact

On our lives than others

If we work outdoors

If we are fishermen

If we sleep under a bridge

We take serious note of a coming storm

We may have to change

The gear we wear

To work through the heavy rain

After work many of us can dry out

To get to work indoors

Umbrellas go up

Raincoats go on

To make the dash to the office

For others the rain is heavier than that

Garbage bags serve as ponchos

Plastic bags cover shopping carts

Holding all they have

When the wind comes up

Pushing the heavy rain

The homesless are

Pushed around

From the flooding under the bridge

They seek shelter under sidewalk awnings

No shops want them in

Restrooms are for "CUSTOMERS ONLY"

They have to keep moving

Trying to get warm

Waiting for the library to open

I ask why is there no other shelter

Why is there not a public place

Where they can clean up

Dry out and get warm

After a cold damp night out

I see more homeless about

During a heavy rain

The only job they have to go to

Is foraging like birds

And I am guilty

Of not even throwing crumbs

At them

Where I know they gather
